What is Movement Based Massage?
Our movement based massage and bodywork is an integration of Thai massage (also called Thai Yoga or Thai Yoga Massage) with various massage techniques (such as myofascial mobilization, positional release, orthopedic massage, deuro neuro modulation, Proprioceptive Neuromuscular Facilitation (PNF)), therapist knowledge and experience. It is a type of deep tissue massage without the severe pain deep tissue massage can produce. We work with you while you are lying on a Thai mat on the floor; unless you cannot get up and down from the floor then we will work on the table. All appointments are clothed which allows the therapist use more of their body for leverage allowing for more pressure into those areas of tension, without the worry of you being appropriately covered (draped).
Our work is outcome based and focuses on a specific problem, such as chronic muscle pain, injury rehabilitation, stress management and the following conditions:
What is a session like?
- Low back pain
- Limited mobility
- Recovery from injuries
- Repetitive strain injury
- Muscle tension in the hamstrings, glutes, IT band, legs, quadriceps, rhomboids, upper back
- Osteoarthritis pain
- Piriformis syndrome
- Upper back, shoulder or neck pain
The client remains fully dressed in comfortable, loose-fitting clothes (exercise clothing) and lies on a Thai mat on the floor. You will be moved into a variety of positions during the session. The therapist uses hands, feet, forearms, elbows, and knees to apply a combination of massage, compression and gentle yoga-like stretches. The massage therapist uses slow, deliberate movements that focus pressure on layers of muscles and tendons along with assisted stretches and joint movements to bring about pain relief.
Why do we work on the mat?
By working on the mat it allows the therapist to use more of their body for leverage for deeper compressions and the room on the floor allows for greater stretches, twists and fluid movement.
Not ready to get on the floor?
Do you have issues getting up and down from the floor? We can work with you on the massage table. You are dressed and the work is movement based massage therapy on the massage table.
How is this different from traditional massage?
Unlike a 60 minute appointment at most massage offices our work is clinical and focused on providing pain relief. During a 60 minute session we will work on 1 or 2 areas of concern. A 90 minutes may encompass more body work depending on your situation. Our clinical massage-bodywork is a slower and deeper style of work and to be most effective it takes more time to bring about the relief you are seeking. **A total body maintenance massage-bodywork session may be done in 60 minutes but is best in 90 minutes. **
